I am delighted to present you with the process behind my compilation of compositions. First and foremost, it is crucial to underline that the majority of this album was conceived during the unique pandemic year of 2021, a period that influenced numerous titles. I also explored various composition methods for certain pieces, partly inspired by John Hollenbeck. John advocates the use of varied starting points in composition, a philosophy I've integrated into this album. For instance, the composition "Game Over" emerged from a drum rhythm from a hip-hop track. "Kasparov, Visit Topalov" was created using a system I developed to generate a piece from chess positions. On the other hand, "Une Petite Marche" was composed starting from a bassline. The music on this album was conceived and arranged with the musicians who would perform the pieces in mind. I knew I would be playing this music with tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, and I was also familiar with the style of the rhythm section musicians. This influenced my way of composing, as well as the choice of pieces and harmonic progressions. Some pieces present different rhythmic approaches. For example, "Une Petite Marche" is a piece in ternary meter, but in 7/4, while "Confinement Forcé" is in 5/4 with a specific 'clave'. "Au Jour le Jour" and "Les Esprits Oubliés" are two ballads, one in 3/4 and the other in 4/4. "Liberté de Mouvement" is a piece influenced by Slide Hampton's writing, while "Not So Long Ago" is inspired by Joe Zawinul's compositions. "In Love Like Someone" is a piece that I have recorded on several occasions and offers great interpretative freedom. This album is dedicated to all those who have supported it. I sincerely hope you will enjoy the music from this compilation of compositions.
